Dear students,

By now, you've probably already decided whether you're a good writer or a bad writer, whether your voice matters or it doesn't. For those of you who feel like bad writers, trust me, I've been there. For those of you who have been told that you're a good writer, but you don't know why, well, I've been there too.  Maybe you've been discouraged by people who have paid more attention to your grammar usage than to your ideas; maybe you're sick of doing something that you don't feel like you're a natural at, but here's the thing: your ideas are more important than your grammar and good writing rarely comes easily.

Writing is meant to be about exploration and discovering that, yes, your voice does matter. For this reason, I'm really excited to introduce you to writing notebooks, and tell you about how learning to write without a prompt and without expecting a grade led me to feel like a genuine writer again. I hope that using these notebooks and sharing our ideas with each other will help you all to realize that you have a unique perspective created through your personal life experiences, and your writing should serve as a reflection of who you are.

With that in mind, my advice for you is this: be bold, be personal, and be unafraid of making mistakes.

Sincerely,

Ms. Mack
